How do I pay my personal tax bill?
By 31st January each year, taxpayers need to have paid their tax liability for the previous tax year, plus their first payment on account towards current year tax liabilities, if applicable.
By 31st July each year, taxpayers need to have made their second payment on account, if they are liable to do so.
Most taxpayers pay via online banking; HMRC have 2 accounts to which you can pay, as follows (you can pay into either account):
sort code - 08 32 10
account number - 12001039
account name - HMRC Cumbernauld
sort code - 08 32 10
account number - 12001020
account name - HMRC Shipley
You can also pay through HMRC online directly or by logging into your Personal Tax Account (Government Gateway) with HMRC.
If you do not have online banking or a personal tax account, HMRC do accept transfers via telephone banking or cheques in the post. The latter of which requires a covering payslip which HMRC may post to you, or one can be printed off from gov.uk.
Whichever method you choose, it is important that the payment reference is input as your ten-digit Unique Taxpayer Reference (UTR) followed by the letter ‘K’.
This payment reference will be the same for taxpayers each year unless they are made bankrupt and issued a new UTR.
